Reply Variations
Reply variations allow you to send different messages to different users for the same keyword. This is a powerful way to A/B test your messaging and find what resonates best with your audience.
What Are Reply Variations?
Reply variations are multiple versions of the same automation message. Lazyspond randomly rotates between them, so each user sees a different version.
Example
Keyword: GUIDE
Variation 1:
Hey {Name}! Here's your free guide: [link]
Variation 2:
Thanks for asking! Check out this resource: [link]
Variation 3:
Perfect timing! I just created this for you: [link]
When users trigger the GUIDE keyword, they randomly receive one of these three messages.
Why Use Reply Variations?
1. A/B Test Your Messaging
Find out which message style gets better engagement:
- Casual vs. professional tone
- Short vs. long messages
- Different CTAs
- Different emojis
2. Prevent Fatigue
Using the same message repeatedly can feel robotic. Variations keep things fresh.
3. Discover What Works
Track which variation gets the best response rate and double down on it.
4. Personalize at Scale
Send personalized messages without writing custom replies for each user.
Setting Up Reply Variations

Best Practices for Reply Variations
1. Keep Variations Similar in Length
Variations should be roughly the same length. Don't mix very short with very long:
✅ Good:
- Variation 1: 1 sentence
- Variation 2: 1 sentence
- Variation 3: 1 sentence
❌ Bad:
- Variation 1: 1 sentence
- Variation 2: 5 sentences
- Variation 3: 1 sentence
2. Test One Variable at a Time
Change only one thing between variations:
✅ Good (testing tone):
- Variation 1: "Hey {Name}! Here's your guide: [link]"
- Variation 2: "Thanks for asking! Here's your guide: [link]"
- Variation 3: "Perfect timing! Here's your guide: [link]"
❌ Bad (changing multiple things):
- Variation 1: "Hey {Name}! Here's your guide: [link]"
- Variation 2: "Thanks for asking! Check out this resource: [link]"
- Variation 3: "Perfect timing! I created this just for you: [link]"
3. Use Consistent Placeholders
If one variation uses {Name}, all should:
✅ Good:
- Variation 1: "Hey {Name}! Here's your guide: [link]"
- Variation 2: "Thanks {Name}! Here's your guide: [link]"
- Variation 3: "Perfect {Name}! Here's your guide: [link]"
❌ Bad:
- Variation 1: "Hey {Name}! Here's your guide: [link]"
- Variation 2: "Thanks! Here's your guide: [link]"
- Variation 3: "Perfect! Here's your guide: [link]"
4. Test Tone
Try different tones and see which resonates:
Casual:
Hey {Name}! 👋 Here's your guide: [link]
Professional:
Thank you for your interest, {Name}. Please find your guide here: [link]
Enthusiastic:
OMG {Name}! 🎉 You're going to love this guide: [link]
5. Test Emoji Usage
Some audiences respond better to emojis, others don't:
With emojis:
Hey {Name}! 👋 Here's your guide: [link] 🎉
Without emojis:
Hey {Name}! Here's your guide: [link]
6. Test Different CTAs
Try different calls-to-action:
Direct:
Here's your guide: [link]
Curious:
Want to see what's inside? [link]
Urgent:
Don't miss this guide: [link]
Reply Variation Limits by Plan
Different plans have different limits:
| Plan | Max Variations | Monthly Replies |
|---|---|---|
| Free | 1 | 100 |
| Starter | 2 | 500 |
| Pro | 3 | 2,000 |
| Premium | 3 | 6,000 |
Each variation counts toward your monthly reply limit. If you have 3 variations and each is triggered 100 times, that's 300 replies total.

Best Practices for Testing
1. Run Tests for 1-2 Weeks
Give each test enough time to gather data:
- At least 50-100 triggers per variation
- 1-2 weeks of data
- Enough volume to see patterns
2. Change One Variable at a Time
Only test one thing per round:
- Week 1: Test tone
- Week 2: Test emoji
- Week 3: Test CTA
3. Track Everything
Use UTM parameters or your CRM to track:
- Which variation gets the most clicks
- Which variation converts best
- Which variation gets the most replies
4. Document Your Learnings
Keep notes on what works:
- Casual tone performs better than professional
- Emojis increase engagement by 40%
- Direct CTAs convert better than curious CTAs
5. Iterate Continuously
Once you find a winner, test against new variations:
- Week 1-2: Test A vs. B
- Week 3-4: Test Winner vs. C
- Week 5-6: Test Winner vs. D
