Icebreakers (Conversation Starters)

Icebreakers are quick-tap buttons that appear when someone opens a chat with you for the first time. They're a powerful way to guide new visitors toward your automations and increase engagement.

What Are Icebreakers?

Icebreakers replace Instagram's default greeting message with custom buttons that users can tap to instantly trigger your automations.

Without Icebreakers, when someone opens a chat with you, they see:

"Say something..."

With Icebreakers

With Icebreakers enabled, they see your custom buttons:

[Send me your guide] [Tell me about pricing] [I want a discount]

When they tap a button, it automatically triggers the corresponding automation.

How Icebreakers Work

The Flow

  1. New visitor opens chat → They click on your Instagram profile
  2. Icebreaker buttons appear → Your custom buttons are displayed above the message box
  3. They tap a button → Instantly triggers the corresponding automation
  4. Automated reply sent → They receive your pre-written message
  5. Lead captured → Their info is recorded in your dashboard

All of this happens instantly, without them typing anything.

Setting Up Icebreakers

Step 1: Create Your Automations First

Icebreakers work by triggering your existing automations. So first, create the automations you want to trigger:

  1. Go to Automations
  2. Create automations for:
    • GUIDE → "Here's your free guide: [link]"
    • PRICING → "Our plans start at $9/month"
    • PROMO → "Use code SAVE20 for 20% off"

Step 2: Create Icebreakers

  1. Go to Icebreakers in your dashboard
  2. Click "Create New Icebreaker"
  3. For each button, configure:
    • Button Text — What the button says (max 30 characters)
    • Linked Automation — Which automation to trigger when tapped
    • Position — Order of buttons (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.)

Step 3: Activate Icebreakers

  1. Click "Activate Icebreakers"
  2. Your buttons will appear to new visitors within minutes
  3. Test by opening a chat from a different account

Icebreaker Best Practices

1. Use Action-Oriented Text

Good button text:

  • "Send me your guide"
  • "Tell me about pricing"
  • "I want a discount"
  • "Book a demo"

Bad button text:

  • "Click here"
  • "More info"
  • "Learn"
  • "Help"

Action-oriented text is clearer and gets more clicks.

2. Keep Button Text Short

  • Maximum 30 characters
  • 2-4 words is ideal
  • Avoid long, wordy buttons

3. Match Buttons to Your Offers

Create buttons that match what you actually offer:

  • If you have a free guide → "Send me your guide"
  • If you offer pricing → "Tell me about pricing"
  • If you have a discount → "I want a discount"
  • If you offer consultations → "Book a demo"

4. Limit to 3 Buttons

Instagram displays up to 3 buttons. More than that and they become hard to read.

Recommended setup:

  1. Primary offer (e.g., "Send me your guide")
  2. Secondary offer (e.g., "Tell me about pricing")
  3. Call-to-action (e.g., "Book a demo")

5. Order by Priority

Put your most important button first:

  1. First button — Your main offer (gets most clicks)
  2. Second button — Secondary offer
  3. Third button — Additional option

6. Test and Optimize

Try different button text and track which gets the most clicks:

  1. Week 1: "Send me your guide"
  2. Week 2: "Get my free guide"
  3. Week 3: "Free guide inside"

Check your analytics to see which version gets the most engagement.

Icebreaker Limits by Plan

Different plans have different limits on how many Icebreakers you can create:

Each Icebreaker can have up to 3 buttons. The "Max Buttons" column refers to how many buttons can be displayed at once.

Icebreaker Analytics

Track Icebreaker Performance

See how many people are clicking your Icebreaker buttons:

  1. Go to Analytics
  2. Look at "Icebreaker Clicks"
  3. See which buttons get the most engagement

Optimize Based on Data

Use analytics to improve your Icebreakers:

  • High clicks, low conversions? → Change the button text or linked automation
  • Low clicks? → Try more action-oriented text
  • One button dominates? → Consider removing underperforming buttons

Troubleshooting

Icebreakers Not Showing?

  1. Are they activated? Go to Icebreakers and verify status is "Active"
  2. Are they new? Wait 5-10 minutes for Instagram to sync
  3. Test from a new account — Icebreakers only show to first-time visitors
  4. Clear Instagram cache — Try logging out and back in

Buttons Not Triggering Automations?

  1. Verify the linked automation exists — Go to Automations and check
  2. Verify the automation is active — Not paused
  3. Check your monthly limit — You may have hit your reply limit
  4. Test again — Sometimes Instagram needs a moment to sync

Icebreaker Text Looks Wrong?

  1. Check character limit — Max 30 characters per button
  2. Verify text is saved — Click "Save" after editing
  3. Refresh your profile — Open Instagram and refresh

Best Practices

1. Update Icebreakers Seasonally

Change your Icebreakers based on current offers:

  • Spring: "Spring sale - 30% off"
  • Summer: "Summer bundle"
  • Holiday: "Holiday special"

2. A/B Test Button Text

Try different versions and track which gets more clicks:

  • Version A: "Send me your guide"
  • Version B: "Get my free guide"
  • Version C: "Free guide inside"

3. Align with Your Content

Make sure your Icebreaker buttons match what you're currently promoting:

  • If you're promoting a guide, include "Send me your guide"
  • If you're promoting a sale, include "I want a discount"
  • If you're promoting a service, include "Book a demo"

4. Keep Them Fresh

Update your Icebreakers every 2-4 weeks to:

  • Prevent fatigue
  • Test new offers
  • Align with campaigns
  • Improve performance
